MIQ’s 13th voucher release: Increase in people participating in lobby – 6 January 2022

Published: 06 January 2022

At 1pm today, the 13th release of rooms through the virtual lobby took place.

Statement from Acting Deputy Secretary Managed Isolation and Quarantine Andrew Milne

There was an increase in the number of people participating in today’s room release, with 9,923 people in the lobby at 1pm, compared to the 2,997 people at the beginning of the last lobby on 16 December.

This ended the consistent downward trend that had been seen since the Government’s border re-opening announcement in late November.

After less than an hour, all 1,250 rooms in this release had been allocated.

We acknowledge the disruption the changes brought in on 21 December to reduce the risk posed by Omicron have caused travellers.

Given the complexity of managing the Omicron and Delta variants, MIQ needs to closely monitor our operating capacity.

For this reason, today’s lobby was smaller than usual, and focused on March and April.

Currently, airlines do not have any red flights scheduled from Australia for March or April. As a result, red flights are also not available in the MIQ flight checker, which is the tool travellers use to link a voucher for MIQ. This means that people intending to travel from Australia in March or April will not have been able to secure vouchers that will link to an existing, eligible flight.

MIQ is working with government agencies and airlines in relation to the delayed border opening and possible flight schedules.

The next voucher release is scheduled for 20 January. The details of this release will be confirmed nearer the date.

The move to a 10-day MIQ stay has resulted in a reduction in overall MIQ capacity. Due to this, the additional groups that need to be accommodated, and the work MIQ is doing to facilitate the return of some Australian travellers, we are unlikely to release any more vouchers for January or February.

Anyone with a voucher who is no longer intending or is unable to travel on their voucher date is encouraged to cancel their voucher so their MIQ spot can be reallocated.

Summary of the stats

The lobby opened at 12noon and at 1pm 9,898 people were moved into the queue – this represented 15,090 passengers. These numbers grew as people entered the queue throughout the room release (these people go to the back of the queue). There were 10,995 people in the queue in total, representing 16,617 passengers.

1,190 people took the opportunity to secure MIQ vouchers – this represented 1,810 passengers from 76 countries, and across 1,250 rooms. Twelve percent of passengers who joined the lobby before 1pm secured a booking.

Dates for today’s release were available across March and April.

March sold out first (in particular the earlier dates) and April was next. This was our fastest lobby yet, but also the smallest amount of rooms to date.

Approximately 40% of people who participated in the room release today were based in New Zealand. This could be people booking on behalf of other people based overseas, or could be people planning to travel overseas for business, to see family etc and return to New Zealand.

The next voucher release is scheduled for 20 January. The details of this release will be confirmed nearer the date.

We have already brought nearly 210,000 people back to New Zealand safely and will continue to focus on the safe return of more Kiwis.

1 Footnote: This data differs from previous releases due to the change in passport entry requirements for the lobby. People are now required to enter the passport numbers of all passengers travelling in their group, and only 1 member of the group can enter the lobby.
