Managed Isolation and Quarantine staff

Information on this page can be attributed to a managed isolation and quarantine spokesperson.

At its peak of operations, MIQ had around 4,500 people working in our 32 facilities. The number changed based on capacity demands and the needs of returnees. Staff work in shifts, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

MIQ recorded 795 staff remaining at designated facilities between 25 April to 1 May 2022. To operate the 4 remaining MIQ facilities from the end of June to August, a total of 185 MBIE staff are needed to cover various shifts across a 24/7 roster.

Staff in the facilities come from a broad range of groups, including the New Zealand Defence Force, the Ministry of Health, New Zealand Police, District Health Boards, the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE), Aviation Security, private security firms and hotel staff.

MBIE engages with a range of providers to deliver services in MIQ facilities, for example chefs and cleaners. It is up to each individual provider how many workers they use to deliver those services in a particular facility.

For more data and statistics information about MIQ see our page on the MBIE website:
